Shane Weeks: Shinnecock Nation, Long Island NY, USA

by Martha Hincapié Charry

Performances on Thursday 11 May (premiere)/Friday 12 May/Saturday 13 May/Sunday 14 May 2023 always at 7.00 p.m. Installation opening hours: Thursday 18 May/Friday 19 May/Sunday 20 May; Thursday 25 May/Friday 26 May/Sunday 27 May 2023 always from 4–7pm at BARAZANI.Berlin, Spreeufer 6, 10178 Berlin.

In „Hekatombe II“, Colombian BIPoC artist Martha Hincapié Charry brings together First Nations representatives from Abya Yala, the so-called Americas. They share their wisdom through dances, songs and ceremonies, sensitizing us to the current crisis in our relationship with the Earth. Together they reflect on the negative effects of climate change, and the human-made hecatombs causing extinction of life forms. In Hincapié Charry’s live performance and 3-channel video installation, a space emerges that understands indigenous knowledge as science and seeks to balance and heal the planet. Involved are:

Petra Gouriyu and the Arralia community: Wayúu Nation, La Guajira Desert, Colombia
Shane Weeks: Shinnecock Nation, Long Island NY, USA
Aimema Úai: Muruy Muina Nation, Amazon rainforest

Hincapié Charry’s work is dedicated to decolonizing conventional stage practices. The artist and curator has already created various reflective spaces dealing with underrepresented BIPoC cultures (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) and climate collapse, among others for the festival „PLATAFORMA Berlin“ at Radialsystem, Dock11 and Uferstudios in Berlin. „Hekatombe II – Integration: movements and rituals for the renewal of the world“ is supported by „NPN stepping out“.
